Meta announced Meta VR Glasses at its Connect event on Wednesday, Sept. 23, setting a spring 2027 launch and a $1,299.99 price for a new virtual reality system built around lightweight glasses and a separate computing puck. The company says the glasses weigh about 100 grams and are five times lighter than Quest 3.
The weight figure applies to the glasses themselves. An optical cable connects them to a pocketable puck that holds the computing hardware, battery and storage. The Guardian reports the puck weighs 300 grams; Meta says its battery supports up to three hours of high-resolution media playback. The two-part design moves much of the hardware off the wearer’s face, while leaving the puck as part of the system.
Meta is pitching the device as a personal cinema, sports seat and workspace as well as a gaming platform. It says the glasses have 5K micro-OLED displays and calls them the first VR device with IMAX Enhanced certification. Meta also says Disney+ subscribers in select countries can stream films including The Avengers and Black Panther in 3D beginning in November, with themed viewing environments.
The company’s other VR announcements include more than 100 immersive live sports events per year once the glasses launch, with partners including MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC. Meta says ESPN college football streams in 8K and 180-degree views will begin on Quest this year, with additional sports coming in 2027.
Gaming remains part of the pitch: Meta says more than 75 games controlled only with hand gestures will be available at launch, and Xbox Cloud Gaming will bring hundreds more streamed titles. The company also promises multi-screen workspaces and a virtual keyboard that can use a desk or table as a touch surface.
The design shifts weight off the head, but the tethered puck remains part of the kit and the price sets a premium bar. Whether that trade-off makes extended viewing and work more comfortable will be clearer after hands-on testing. TechCrunch’s launch coverage likewise highlights the lighter form factor and entertainment focus.
